Spain to implement deposit return system for bottles and cans

Spain is preparing to implement a Deposit, Return, and Refund System (SDDR) to manage beverage containers such as plastic bottles and cans. Under this new system, consumers will pay an additional deposit of at least 10 cents when purchasing specific beverage containers, which can then be recovered by returning the empty packaging to designated collection points, such as machines installed in supermarkets.

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has called for the system to be designed with high accessibility, ensuring that collection points are sufficiently distributed and that the public receives clear information regarding its operation. The goal of the measure is to increase recycling and reuse rates by incentivizing consumers to return packaging.
