Spain approves new University Student Statute and housing package

The Spanish Council of Ministers has approved a new University Student Statute and a €45 million investment package to expand university residences. The new Statute, which updates the 2010 framework, introduces rights such as academic strikes, digital disconnection, and access to free psychological support and mental health protocols. It also establishes duties regarding the appropriate use of artificial intelligence.

The €45 million housing initiative aims to create approximately 2,000 new affordable residential places across seven projects in its first phase. Key beneficiaries include the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (€6.5 million), the Universidad de Jaén (€3.56 million), the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (€13.36 million), and the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (€8.19 million), among others. These measures are intended to mitigate housing accessibility issues for students.

Additionally, the government approved €17 million to maintain 1,135 medical degree positions in public universities for the 2026-2027 academic year. Separately, a €180 million fund was allocated to support affordable rental housing in 317 designated high-pressure market municipalities across five autonomous communities.
