Spain to launch national plan for food waste law implementation
Six months after the implementation of Spain's food waste prevention law, the agro-industrial sector, distributors, and large-scale restaurants are beginning to adapt to the new regulations. While the law does not currently mandate the specific quantification of rescued food, early indicators suggest progress in the fight against food waste.
However, concerns have been raised because no autonomous communities have yet begun the deployment of the regulation. To ensure effective and uniform application, José Miguel Herrero, the Director General of Food, announced that the government will launch a national plan before the end of the year. This plan is intended to provide legal certainty and establish coordinated controls across different administrative levels.
The Ministry of Agriculture is currently identifying specific points in the supply chain and obligations that require monitoring. Additionally, recent data from the ministry indicates that household food waste in Spain has decreased by 20% over the past five years.
