Spain to increase diesel fuel discount to 20 cents per litre

The Spanish government will increase the diesel fuel discount to 20 cents per litre starting in September. This decision follows an emergency safeguard clause triggered by a significant rise in diesel prices.

In July, diesel prices increased by 15.7% compared to the same month in 2025, surpassing the 15% threshold required to activate additional motorist assistance. This new discount is four times higher than the five-cent reduction originally scheduled for September. For a motorist purchasing 50 litres of diesel, this represents a €10 saving instead of the previously planned €2.50.

Unlike diesel, petrol prices rose by only 7.3% year-on-year in July, remaining below the government's trigger point. Consequently, the petrol discount will proceed as planned, reducing to five cents per litre in September. The Ministry of Economy stated that this mechanism is intended to provide the highest level of protection to fuels experiencing the most severe price increases.
