Spain to Submit Bid for EU AI Gigafactory with Public‑Private Consortium

Spain will submit its candidacy in September to host one of the European Union’s seven AI gigafactories. The bid is backed by a public‑private consortium that includes the Spanish government, the Generalitat de Catalunya, Banco Santander, ACS, Telefónica and Multiverse Computing. The project is slated to mobilise around €5 billion, combining a €719 million investment authorised by the SETT, a €300 million voluntary contribution to EuroHPC and private capital that will hold a 51 % stake, while the state retains 48 %.

The gigafactory will have dual sites in Móra la Nova (Catalonia) and San Fernando de Henares (Madrid). Francesc Fajula, former head of the Mobile World Capital Barcelona foundation, has been appointed executive director. The facility aims to boost Spanish universities, SMEs, research centres and overall competitiveness in the European AI race.
