Spain to transition to DVB-T2 television standard in 2026
Spain is set to undergo a major transition in its Digital Terrestrial Television (TDT) system starting November 5, 2026. The update involves the implementation of the DVB-T2 standard, a technology used by most European Union countries to improve image and sound quality.
This technological shift aims to facilitate Ultra High Definition (UHD) broadcasts, allowing traditional channels to compete more effectively with other audiovisual platforms. The transition will occur in phases, beginning on November 3, 2026, when RTVE will reorganize its RGE1 digital multiplex to integrate five HD channels.
Viewers will likely need to rescan their televisions to locate new broadcasts and avoid losing channels that may change frequencies during the process.
