Spain tourism sector reaches record employment and economic milestones

Spain's tourism sector is reaching historic milestones in employment and economic contribution. In July 2026, tourism-related social security affiliations reached a record 3,093,702 people, accounting for 13.9% of the national workforce. The hospitality sector led this growth, particularly in food, beverage, and accommodation services.

Regional data shows strong performance across several areas. In Andalusia, hotel establishments hosted 2.2 million travelers in July, resulting in 7 million overnight stays and a 9.3% increase in hotel employment. Torremolinos emerged as a leader in the region with nearly 700,000 overnight stays. In Jerez, traveler numbers reached a historic high, while in the Canary Islands, tourism employment hit record levels even during the traditional low season.

In Alicante, audiovisual productions have become a significant driver of high-end hotel stays, generating over 4,100 overnight stays in the first half of 2026 due to major international film projects.

Despite the economic boom, the sector faces challenges. Rapid growth is increasing pressure on housing markets, notably in Marbella, where high property prices may impact the availability of housing for workers. Additionally, the increasing dependence on tourism is driving debates regarding sustainability and the management of mass tourism in regions like the Balearic Islands.
