Spain tourism sector shows growth and reduced seasonality
Tourism employment in Andalucía reached 365,322 workers in September, marking a 4.2% increase compared to the previous year. This growth included 14,655 additional workers, consisting of 302,523 employees and 62,809 self-employed individuals.
Nationally, Spain's tourism sector saw an absolute increase of 136,415 affiliates, bringing the total to just over 3 million workers, a 4.7% year-on-year rise. Tourism employment now accounts for 13.7% of the country's total workforce. While the hospitality sector saw significant gains, particularly in food and beverage services, travel agencies reported a decline, which authorities attribute to changes in industrial classification codes rather than a real loss of jobs.
A report from The Data Appeal Company - Grupo Almaviva indicates that seasonality in Spanish tourism is decreasing, with 47% of activity now occurring outside of the peak season. Emerging markets such as Argentina, Poland, and Brazil are driving this trend, with demand from these regions growing significantly during mid- and low-season periods. Cultural tourism remains a primary driver during these times, alongside growing segments in family tourism and active wellness experiences.
