Spain traffic authorities issue thousands of fines in enforcement campaign

Spanish traffic authorities have reported significant enforcement actions during recent surveillance campaigns. Between August 3 and August 9, 2026, the Guardia Civil deployed 3,466 checkpoints across Spain, inspecting over 1 million vehicles. This resulted in 69,231 speeding fines, representing a 6.7% infraction rate, which is an increase from the 6.2% recorded in April.

While highways accounted for the highest absolute number of fines (38,303), conventional roads saw a higher percentage of drivers penalized, with 7.05% of controlled vehicles receiving citations compared to 6.37% on motorways.

Authorities are also warning drivers about the illegal possession of radar inhibitors. Carrying such a device—even if it is not turned on or was installed by a previous owner of a second-hand vehicle—is considered a very serious offense in Spain. Penalties for possessing radar inhibitors can reach up to 6,000 euros and the loss of six driver's license points. Additionally, radar detectors are prohibited and carry fines of approximately 500 euros and a three-point deduction.
