Spain traffic authorities report speeding increases and radar discrepancies
Spanish traffic authorities have reported significant findings regarding speeding enforcement and regulatory discrepancies. During a surveillance campaign in August, the Guardia Civil established 3,466 checkpoints, verifying the speed of over 1 million vehicles. This resulted in 69,231 speeding citations, representing 6.7% of all vehicles checked—a slight increase from the 6.2% recorded in April. Over half of these infractions occurred on highways and motorways.
In a separate development regarding enforcement accuracy, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has been ordered to refund fines to drivers due to discrepancies between road signage and radar settings. In one specific case on the A-7 highway, a driver was issued fines for exceeding an 80 km/h limit despite road signs indicating a 100 km/h limit. The administration admitted the sanctions were not proceeding correctly and revoked them. This incident highlights potential systemic issues where radar devices may be configured with limits that do not match the posted signage on various roads in the Cádiz province.
