Spain traffic regulations: fine amounts and license point penalties

Traffic regulations in Spain classify infractions into light, serious, and very serious categories, each carrying different financial penalties and point deductions from a driver's license. According to the DGT, light infractions can cost up to 100 euros without losing points, while serious offenses typically involve 200 euro fines and point losses. Very serious infractions generally result in 500 euro fines and mandatory point deductions. Drivers can lose between 2 and 6 points per infraction, with certain dangerous behaviors potentially leading to the loss of all available points.

Specific high-penalty behaviors include speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and mobile phone use. For instance, using a mobile phone while driving can result in a 200 euro fine and the loss of 6 points. Alcohol-related offenses can range from 500 to 1,000 euros and the loss of 4 to 6 points, while drug use can lead to a 1,000 euro fine and 6 points lost.

Authorities, including the Guardia Civil, emphasize that drivers must maintain attention even when stopped at red lights. Distractions such as applying makeup while stationary at a traffic signal can result in a 200 euro fine and a 2-point deduction, as drivers are legally required to maintain the diligence necessary to react to unforeseen events. Paying fines promptly may allow for a 50% reduction, provided the driver waives the right to appeal.
