Madrid refuses to accept additional unaccompanied migrant minors from Ceuta
Around 7,000 unaccompanied migrant minors have arrived in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, prompting the central government to plan a rapid redistribution of the children to autonomous regions under the mandatory solidarity law.
Ana Dávila, councilor for Family, Youth and Social Affairs in the Community of Madrid, said Madrid will not take any more minors until the national government restores effective border control. She argued that Madrid’s child‑protection system has been strained for over two years and cannot absorb a mass influx without risking the safety of existing wards. Dávila also criticised the central government’s handling of migration policy and its relationship with Morocco, saying it has “lost absolute control”.
The Ministry of Youth and Childhood, headed by Sira Rego, affirmed that the redistribution will prioritize regions with available capacity and will provide immediate state protection for the minors. Meanwhile, humanitarian reports from Ceuta describe hundreds of minors living in an abandoned industrial zone with little food, water, or hygiene, and at least 67 deaths have been recorded among migrants attempting to reach the enclave by sea.
