Spain unemployment benefit rules for work and travel
Regulations regarding unemployment benefits in Spain outline specific conditions for maintaining eligibility while working or traveling abroad. Under current rules, full-time employment is generally incompatible with receiving benefits, though individuals may suspend their claim during a contract. If a contract lasts less than 360 days, benefits can be resumed upon completion. For longer contracts, recipients may have a ‘right of option’ to choose between resuming their previous benefit or starting a new one based on recent contributions.
Additionally, the ‘Complemento de Apoyo al Empleo’ (CAE) allows certain individuals to combine employment with benefits. For those whose benefits were recognized after April 1, 2025, and have lasted over a year, they may receive a portion of their benefit while working from the tenth month onward. This compatibility is expected to become automatic in 2026.
Regarding international travel, beneficiaries can stay outside of Spain for up to 30 days per year without losing benefits, provided they notify the SEPE of their departure date, return date, and foreign address. Exceeding 30 days results in a temporary suspension, while stays exceeding 90 days—unless related to work, studies, or international cooperation—can lead to the permanent extinction of the benefit. Between 2016 and 2025, approximately 18,728 people lost their benefits due to traveling abroad without proper notification.
