Spain unemployment dips below 2.3 million as Social Security affiliation hits record
In June 2026 Spain’s labour market recorded its lowest unemployment level since January 2008, with 2,291,982 people registered as job‑seekers, a decline of 28,739 from the previous month. The drop was driven mainly by the services sector, especially hospitality, retail and leisure, which absorbed a large share of summer hiring.
Social Security reported a historic 22.4 million affiliates, after 128,533 new contributors joined in June, the highest monthly increase on record. Two‑thirds of the new affiliates are regularised immigrant workers, boosting the contribution base. Youth unemployment fell to its all‑time low, while long‑term unemployment among older workers showed signs of increase. Analysts note that many of the new jobs are in precarious contracts and that a large volume of unregistered overtime persists, raising concerns about the quality of the employment surge.
The figures come as Spain faces broader economic headwinds, including slower growth among key European trading partners and tighter monetary conditions, but a strong tourism season is expected to sustain employment through the second half of 2026.
