Spain updates traffic light regulations to improve pedestrian safety

Spain's Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has updated the General Traffic Regulations to improve safety for vulnerable road users. Starting October 1, 2026, new programming rules will prohibit the simultaneous use of flashing amber lights for vehicles and green lights for pedestrians at the same intersection.

This regulatory change aims to eliminate ambiguity that has historically contributed to accidents at pedestrian crossings and low-visibility turns. Under the new rules, if a pedestrian has a green light, the vehicle signal cannot be flashing amber. Additionally, the amber light must always be preceded by a solid red light for vehicles, meaning many urban traffic lights will require the incorporation of a new fixed red phase.
