Spain updates traffic regulations and driving license rules

Spain is implementing updates to its General Traffic Regulations. Starting October 1, new rules aim to increase safety for vulnerable road users. Drivers overtaking cyclists must now reduce their speed by at least 20 km/h relative to the road limit and maintain a minimum lateral distance of 1.5 meters.

Motorcyclists face new requirements, including the use of approved helmets, protective gloves, and closed footwear. Additionally, riders must carry a reflective vest when leaving their vehicle on interurban roads. For personal mobility vehicles like electric scooters, the minimum age is set at 15, and helmet use is mandatory.

In a separate regulatory shift aligned with European Union directives, drivers with licenses restricted to automatic vehicles (marked with code 78) will soon be able to operate manual cars more easily. Instead of a full practical exam, drivers will only need to complete a mandatory seven-hour practical course focused on clutch and gear usage. EU member states have until the end of 2028 to adapt national laws to this standard.
