Spain and Ecuador implement new traffic and driving regulations

Various updates to traffic and driving regulations are being implemented in Spain and Ecuador.

In Spain, the DGT is introducing several changes effective late 2026. Motorcyclists will face new requirements, including mandatory protective gloves on interurban roads and the prohibition of open footwear like sandals. Additionally, riders must carry a high-visibility reflective vest for use during roadside stops. New traffic signal rules will prevent amber lights from coinciding with pedestrian green lights to improve safety. The DGT is also promoting the V-27 virtual signal, a digital warning displayed on connected vehicle dashboards to alert drivers of upcoming hazards detected via the V-16 connected beacon system. Furthermore, Santa Cruz de Tenerife will become the first Spanish municipality to require valid vehicle technical inspections (ITV) for access to its Low Emission Zone.

In Ecuador, the National Transit Agency (ANT) is maintaining a pilot program through September 2026 where driver's license services are managed by the last digit of the citizen's ID rather than specific appointments to reduce crowding. In Guayaquil, the transit authority has extended the registration deadline for vehicles with license plates ending in 7 to September 5.
