Spain upgrades power grid with new substation in Castellón and port interconnection in Tarragona

Red Eléctrica has put into service an expansion of the Betxí 220 kV substation in the province of Castellón. The upgrade raises the capacity of the high‑voltage network to better serve industrial users, especially the ceramic sector, and residential customers in the Plana Baixa area. The project, approved in April 2024 as part of Spain’s energy‑planning modifications, aims to strengthen the link between the transmission and distribution grids and support the country’s renewable‑energy transition.

The Port Authority of Tarragona has launched a tender to interconnect the electrical networks of its Andalusia and Catalonia docks. The plan calls for two 25 kV, 400 mm medium‑voltage cables to be installed via horizontal directional drilling beneath the main navigation channel. With a budget of about €11.2 million and a 13‑month execution window, the work will create a more robust, secure and efficient power supply for the port’s facilities, integrating electricity, telecommunications and water services into a meshed infrastructure.
