Spain upgrades wastewater treatment with new plant contracts and repairs

The public water utility Canal de Isabel II awarded Acciona a five‑year contract worth €44.7 million to operate and maintain the Arroyo Culebro Cuenca Media Alta and Arroyo Culebro Cuenca Baja treatment plants in the south of Madrid. The works aim to cut nitrogen emissions by 80 %, raise the plants’ energy self‑sufficiency to over 65 % and incorporate green‑hydrogen production using regenerated water, solar power and biogas. The facilities serve Getafe, Pinto, Fuenlabrada, Leganés, Humanes and Parla, covering about 2.5 million residents.

In the Valencian town of Xàtiva, the municipal council completed repairs on the Edar serving the Mistero urbanisation after vandalism left the plant inoperable. The €23,751 contract with Global Omnium Medioambiente restored hydraulic and electrical systems, enabling the station to meet the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar’s demand to stop uncontrolled discharges into a nearby ravine. The restart secures proper wastewater treatment for the growing residential area.
