Spain validates ePREMs to evaluate hospital care quality
A multicenter study involving eleven hospitals in Spain has validated a set of electronic Patient-Reported Experience Measures (ePREMs) to evaluate hospital care quality. Led by Emmanuel Gimenez from Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, the research published in the ‘Journal of Patient Experience’ focused on moving beyond traditional satisfaction surveys to provide more rigorous, direct user perspectives.
The project evaluated an initial bank of 23 electronic questionnaires and completed formal cognitive and psychometric validation for five of them. To ensure data applicability, the study utilized a strategy where results were made available to healthcare professionals via intranet, a process described as the ‘democratization of PREMs’ to encourage data-driven decision-making in clinical units.
Between November 2022 and November 2025, a tertiary hospital collected 400,719 responses via automated SMS links, achieving a 24 percent participation rate. The study incorporated the Net Promoter Score (NPS) as a global recommendation indicator, reaching a mean global value of 64.4 with 8.5 percent detractors.
