Spain vehicle fleet: 78% of cars are over nine years old

A new study by Fundación CEA and ASITUR, utilizing data from Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), reveals that 78% of the vehicles registered in Spain are more than nine years old as of 2025.

Of the more than 37 million registered vehicles, approximately 29 million exceed nine years of age, with the average vehicle age sitting at roughly 14.6 years. The report, titled ‘La antigüedad del vehículo como factor de riesgo en la seguridad vial’, explores the link between an aging automotive fleet and road safety.

While the study notes that age does not automatically equate to insecurity—as maintenance, mileage, and safety equipment are critical factors—it suggests that older vehicles are more closely associated with the severity of accident consequences rather than the frequency of accidents themselves. According to survey data, 35% of drivers believe vehicle age increased the severity of their accident consequences, and 26% felt that modern safety systems might have prevented their accidents.
