Spain: Water usage controversy in Ibiza and farm approvals in Codo
In Ibiza, a controversy regarding an Egyptian-themed party in Sa Pedrerano has been clarified following an investigation into water consumption. While initial claims suggested 170,000 liters were used, official invoices reveal the actual supply was 60,000 liters. The higher figure resulted from a mathematical estimate assuming a 20-centimeter water depth across the 850-square-meter lake surface, whereas the actual supply would only result in an average depth of approximately 7 centimeters.
In the municipality of Codo, the local council has declared the construction of four large-scale pig farms a matter of public interest. These facilities, promoted by Explotaciones Ganaderas Estiche (a subsidiary of CINCAPORC), are being authorized on rural land, a move that allows for expedited administrative processes and potential compulsory expropriation. The decision has faced criticism from the group Stop Ganadería Industrial, noting that the declaration was approved in an extraordinary session with little information provided to residents, and highlighting that the local water has been classified as unfit for human consumption since 2023.
