Spain's World Cup Win Triggers Mass Celebrations and Fatal Fountain Collapse

Spain defeated Argentina 1‑0 in extra time to claim the 2026 FIFA World Cup, sparking nationwide celebrations. Nearly two million fans gathered in Madrid for a parade that included a banner by teenager Lamine Yamal mocking Argentina, a champagne toast by Marcos Llorente and Ferran Torres, and viral moments such as Ferran wearing a "Make Spain great again" cap.

During the celebrations in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, a crowd had climbed onto a historic fountain at the Glorieta del Árbol Gordo. The upper platform collapsed, killing a 13‑year‑old boy and injuring several others. The incident prompted emergency response from police, firefighters and medical services, and the town declared three days of mourning. Across Spain more than 80 people were reported injured, including two fatalities – the teenager in Ciudad Rodrigo and a 20‑year‑old who suffered convulsions while watching the match in Toledo. Authorities made dozens of arrests for public order offences.

Other fallout included a viral meme wave, criticism of Argentina’s conduct, a controversy over pre‑produced Argentine shirts with a fourth star, and a backlash against FIFA president Gianni Infantino from La Liga chief Javier Tebas.
