Spain women's basketball team prepares for 2026 World Cup in Berlin

Coach Miguel Méndez has called up a 21‑player squad for the Spanish women's national basketball team as it begins a training camp in Madrid ahead of the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for 4–13 September in Berlin. The provisional roster includes veteran guard Mariona Ortiz, who helped Spain win silver at the recent EuroBasket, as well as newcomers Paula Ginzo and Raquel Carrera, the latter returning from the United States. The team will trim the list to 12 players before the tournament.

Spain’s preparation includes a six‑match friendly series against Germany, Nigeria, Belgium, Mali, China and a second game versus Mali, designed to fine‑tune tactics and assess the WNBA‑based players expected to join later. The squad is placed in Group A with host Germany, Mali and Japan, aiming for a favorable quarter‑final draw.

Méndez emphasized the blend of youth and experience, noting that the players are motivated to perform at their highest level and that the new playing style being implemented should prove effective in the upcoming World Cup.
