Spain records historic labor absenteeism rate, costing €59 bn

Spain’s absenteeism rate reached a record 7.6 % of contracted hours in 2025, the highest in its history. The Adecco report estimates the total economic cost at €59.1 billion – about 3.7 % of GDP – a rise of 11.7 % from the previous year. The highest regional expenditures were in Catalonia (€11.6 bn), Madrid (€10.3 bn) and Andalusia (€7.4 bn). Services contributed the most impact (€45.1 bn), followed by industry (€11.1 bn) and construction (€2.9 bn).

Mental‑health related sick‑leave is surging, especially in Andalusia where cases rose 150 % over the past decade. In 2024 more than 107 000 temporary incapacity processes were opened for mental disorders, with an average duration of 103 days – five days longer than the national average. Young workers (25‑35) saw a 173 % increase in such leaves.

The fashion sector shows mixed trends: Inditex and Mango reported moderate absenteeism increases, while H&M and the perfume group Puig posted declines, all generally remaining below the national average. Employers and unions describe absenteeism as a "country‑wide challenge" that affects both workers and business costs.
