Spain's Aemps warns against magistral estrogen use amid hormone therapy shortages
The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Products (Aemps) has issued a warning regarding the use of magistral estrogen formulas as a response to widespread shortages of hormone replacement therapies. Aemps stated that these pharmacy-prepared formulas should be a last resort because they exhibit significantly lower and more variable hormone absorption levels compared to authorized industrial medications such as gels, patches, or sprays.
The shortage of the estradiol spray Lenzetto has triggered a ripple effect, increasing demand for other treatments like patches and creams, which has also led to supply issues for products such as Evopad 25, Bijuva, and Estradot 75.
In response to the crisis, the Catalan Health Department has indicated it may authorize local pharmacies to prepare magistral estradiol formulas if the supply shortage is not resolved within one month. While this provides an alternative for menopausal women and transgender individuals, Aemps maintains that the lack of data on absorption rates and the influence of various excipients make these preparations less reliable than standardized industrial drugs.
