Spain's Agriculture Minister Luis Planas meets young cooperatives on generational renewal
Minister Luis Planas of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food met in Madrid with the Group of Young Agro‑Food Cooperatives of Spain to hear their concerns and present government actions aimed at securing a generational turnover in the sector. Delegates, including Balearic farmer Margalida Seguí, highlighted obstacles such as land‑access difficulties, high island costs, excessive bureaucracy and the need for digital tools to ease farm management.
The ministry pledged to allocate 10 % of the future Common Agricultural Policy budget to generational renewal, increase funding for the Cultiva training programme from €1.2 million to €2.4 million for 2026, launch a joint "Platinum" initiative to support farm succession in cooperatives, and convene a summer working group with autonomous regions to exchange best practices. Youth and women in agriculture were singled out for differentiated support through agrarian insurance, PAC aids and ICO‑MAPA‑Saeca credit lines.
Cooperatives called for measures that facilitate access to under‑used farmland, tax and social‑security incentives for young producers, and broader technical, financial and legal support beyond the first years of activity to sustain rural communities.
