Spain is emerging as the main digital gateway for artificial‑intelligence services in southern Europe, with dozens of data‑center facilities concentrated around Madrid. International projections from the International Energy Agency estimate that global electricity consumption by data centres will double by 2030, reaching about 945 TWh – roughly 3 % of total demand – and that annual growth in the sector will outpace overall electricity use by a factor of four. In Spain, the expansion fuels concerns over noise, heat, water consumption and rising housing costs, as large‑scale installations require massive cooling systems that draw millions of litres of fresh water daily and drive up local rents.
Similar protests have erupted elsewhere: residents in small U.S. towns report sudden construction of data‑centre farms that generate constant industrial humming and dust, while citizens in Inzai, Japan, have lodged lawsuits over perceived health and environmental risks. These cases highlight the broader social and environmental challenges tied to the physical infrastructure that powers AI services.
