Spain’s Andalusian Coast Faces Surge in Organized Drug Trafficking

Political leaders in Spain’s People’s Party have warned that drug‑smuggling boats, known as “narcolanchas,” are operating freely along the southern coastline from Cádiz to Almería. They are demanding a massive increase in police personnel, patrol vessels and advanced technology, and propose designating the maritime zone as a “Special Singular Zone” to curb the rising violence and thefts linked to the traffickers.

Analysts note that only four patrol boats are currently tasked with monitoring a coastline that is a key entry point to Europe via the Strait of Gibraltar. Organized crime groups have become highly professionalised, with international financing, sophisticated communications and the ability to infiltrate legitimate economies, raising concerns that the problem extends beyond local drug smuggling to money‑laundering, corruption and broader national security threats.
