Spain's August 12 Solar Eclipse Sparks Nationwide Scientific Interest

Spain is preparing for a total solar eclipse on 12 August, the first of an anticipated "Ibérico trio" of eclipses. The event has ignited a surge of public enthusiasm for astronomy, with eclipse‑related books becoming best‑sellers and many quickly selling out. Publishers such as geoPlaneta and Guadalmazán reported record sales of their eclipse titles.

The Ministry of Science lists more than 200 scheduled activities across the country, including exhibitions, lectures, and workshops for children and adults. Catalonia alone counts over a hundred programmes, while cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza and La Palma host museum‑driven talks and festivals. Specific initiatives feature a large eclipse exhibition by the RACAB in Barcelona, workshops on pinhole‑box construction in Cantabria and Pontevedra, and a film series about eclipses in A Coruña.
