Spain's August total solar eclipse sparks rural tourism surge

Spain is preparing for a total solar eclipse on 12 August 2024, one of the few places on Earth where the event will be fully visible. The path of totality runs across the northern half of the country, including cities such as La Coruña, León, Burgos, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Teruel and the island of Mallorca, and a small area of northeast Portugal.

The government has designated the Yebes Observatory, about 70 km northeast of Madrid, as the official centre for tracking the eclipse, which is the first of a three‑eclipse series expected in 2026, 2027 and 2028. Officials hope the rare celestial show will shift tourist activity from the usual summer beach destinations toward the countryside.

Accommodation demand has surged, with prices soaring dramatically. Listings in Teruel show nightly rates from €300 to €1,400, while in Burgos a 60‑square‑metre apartment is advertised for €5,000 per night. The spike reflects the anticipated influx of eclipse‑chasing visitors to these traditionally quiet rural areas.
