Spain's bicycle industry pushes for activation of €40 million government aid as e‑bike sales surge
The Spanish bicycle market sold 1,093,478 units in 2025, generating €2.177 billion in revenue and directly employing more than 24,000 people across the value chain. Electric bicycles accounted for 21.5% of all sales and 35.2% of total sector turnover, with sales rising by roughly 40,000 units year‑on‑year.
Over the past eleven years, e‑bike sales have multiplied sixteen‑fold, marking the fastest electrification trend among vehicle categories. Despite strong growth, the higher average price of e‑bikes (about €2,101 versus €1,058 for conventional bikes) remains a barrier for many households and businesses.
In September 2024 the Spanish government announced a €40 million aid package – €20 million for subsidies on electric‑assist bicycles for individuals and delivery firms, and €20 million for expanding public bike‑sharing schemes. The Association of Brands and Bicycles of Spain (AMBE) says the programme has been stalled, leaving up to 400,000 Spaniards per year without the promised support. AMBE is urging Minister Óscar Puente and the Prime Minister to activate the funding promptly, arguing that the aid would sustain a sector that now contributes significantly to employment, emissions reduction and urban mobility.
