Spain housing initiatives: public construction and modular solutions
Various initiatives are addressing the housing crisis in Spain through public construction, modular technology, and institutional partnerships. The state housing company, Casa 47, is activating land from Sareb to develop approximately 303 affordable homes in Ávila, Logroño, and Palma de Mallorca. Additionally, the project for the urbanization of Ciudad Jardín in La Maruca and Jardín de Cantos has received environmental approval, which will include the construction of 282 homes.
In Valladolid, modular construction is gaining traction with the completion of a three-story building assembled in just three days. Meanwhile, in Galicia, an agreement between the Archdiocese of Santiago, Cáritas Diocesana, and the Official College of Architects of Galicia aims to rehabilitate ecclesiastical properties, such as rectories, for social and emergency housing.
On a local level, the town of Marinaleda in Seville continues its decades-long model of public housing, where residents pay rents of approximately 15 euros per month. These efforts come amid calls from the Economic and Social Council of Castilla y León for a national state pact to coordinate housing policies across all levels of government.
