Spain's central wildfires scorch 170,000 ha, affect 1,600 families

From July 22, wildfires ripped through the provinces of Ávila and the Community of Madrid, burning more than 170,000 hectares. The flames destroyed 1,580 homes, damaged businesses and farms, and forced the evacuation or confinement of over 100,000 residents.

The Spanish government declared the affected zones catastrophic, enabling families with completely destroyed primary residences to apply for up to €15,120 in aid, plus additional smaller amounts for structural damage and essential belongings. Aid is not automatic; claimants must submit documentation and meet strict criteria, and many criticize the process as slow and insufficient. The disaster has also revived political debate over regional budgeting, with criticism aimed at the Madrid regional government for diverting fire‑prevention funds and at the central government for limited resources such as hydro‑aircraft.

The total market value of the burned houses is estimated at €344 million, while full reconstruction would cost citizens more than €157 million.
