Spain's chestnut regions support rural economies and traditions
Spain features several major chestnut-growing regions that support rural economies and gastronomic traditions. Key areas include the mountains of Ávila, the Montseny Massif, the Soutos in Galicia, and regions in Andalusia.
In Ávila, El Tiemblo serves as a significant location for chestnut tourism. Located near Madrid in the eastern foothills of Gredos, the area features the Sendero del Castañar, a 4.4 km walking trail that leads to ‘El Abuelo’, a monumental chestnut tree several centuries old. This forest is part of the Iruelas Valley nature reserve, which also includes the El Burguillo reservoir.
