Spain's Coastal Dunes Highlight Huelva and Galicia Landscapes

In Huelva province, the fossil dunes of Asperillo rise nearly 100 metres in places, forming one of the largest coastal dune systems in Europe. The orange‑toned strata reveal a long geological history, and low tide recently exposed the ruins of the historic Torre del Asperillo, a former watchtower linked visually to nearby towers.

Further north, the O Vilar beach in the municipality of Ribeira, Galicia, stretches about five kilometres of white sand within the Corrubedo Natural Park. The beach features the region’s largest mobile dune, which can reach roughly 20 metres in winter and migrates a few centimetres each year. Wooden boardwalks protect the dune system while allowing visitors to experience the virtually untouched Atlantic coastline, which also includes freshwater and brackish lagoons that support diverse bird life.
