Spain's commercial fleet electrification faces infrastructure and regulatory hurdles
Commercial fleets and rental firms account for 53% of all new electric vehicle registrations in Spain, with projections of 254,000 EVs on the road by 2025 – a 90% year‑on‑year increase. The rapid rollout is constrained by five key challenges: limited grid capacity for simultaneous charging, high peak‑demand costs, lack of interoperability between vehicle brands and charging management systems, the need for ultra‑fast chargers (over 400 kW) for heavy‑duty trucks, and the complexity of integrating AI‑driven charge optimisation.
A separate study, the European Fleet Emission Monitor (EFEM) by Alphabet (BMW Group), finds regulatory uncertainty slowing corporate fleet electrification. About 52% of Spanish fleet managers say unclear policy hampers investment decisions; 14% are accelerating projects, 21% are postponing, and 17% are opting for hybrid vehicles as a transition. Only 35% rank sustainability as a priority, and just 24% have internal sustainability units, well below the European average. Awareness of public subsidies is low, with 41% recognising them but many unable to meet eligibility criteria, and 56% feel poorly informed about electric mobility.
