Spain's Court of Auditors seeks recovery of €400,000 in Badajoz case

Spain's Court of Auditors has initiated proceedings to recover more than €400,000 in public funds allegedly paid irregularly to David Sánchez, the brother of the Spanish Prime Minister, and his associate Luis María Carrero.

The investigation follows a July ruling by the Provincial Court of Badajoz, which determined that unnecessary and empty public employment positions were created for both individuals through a selection process described as “faked” and “purely cosmetic.” According to official records, David Sánchez received approximately €340,572 between July 2017 and May 2025, while Carrero received approximately €86,988. The total amount to be recovered is estimated to exceed €427,500 plus interest.

The Court of Auditors has notified the involved parties, including the Badajoz Provincial Council, of the imminent opening of inquiries. While the Court's Prosecutor's Office has not opposed this phase, the Provincial Council—led by President Raquel del Puerto—has expressed opposition to the proceedings. Various political parties and associations, including the PP, Vox, Iustitia Europa, and Hazte Oír, have joined the case to ensure the recovery of the funds.
