Spain's cultural foundations report economic impact as heritage sites add accessibility
A study released at the Casa Botines Gaudí museum in Castilla y León quantified the socioeconomic contribution of Spain’s cultural foundations. The report, compiled by the Spanish Association of Foundations and consultancy AFI, identified 3,572 cultural foundations operating in 951 municipalities, with around 40% located in rural areas. According to the findings, these foundations generate over €10.34 billion in gross added value, support roughly 170,000 jobs, and the broader cultural sector accounts for 2.2 % of Spain’s GDP and more than 578,000 direct positions.
Separately, the Diputación de Granada announced new accessibility measures for the Castillo de La Calahorra. The initiatives include a 1.2‑metre tactile model of the castle equipped with 20 haptic points that provide audio explanations for visually‑impaired visitors, and a newly launched website that streamlines ticket reservations and offers detailed historical information. Both projects aim to make cultural heritage more inclusive and to stimulate tourism and local development.
