Spain’s data centre capacity forecast jumps 55% as global power use set to triple by 2030
Morgan Stanley has raised its long‑term projection for Spain’s data centre market, estimating total capacity will reach 4.3 GW by 2035 – a 55 % increase over its earlier outlook. The firm highlights a shift toward northern regions, especially Aragón, which could host up to 3 GW thanks to inexpensive land, abundant renewable power (80 % of installed capacity), and improved connectivity via submarine cables. Major cloud providers are driving the buildup: Amazon Web Services announced a €34 billion investment and Microsoft plans projects exceeding €6.5 billion in the area. The report also notes challenges such as grid saturation, labor shortages, supply‑chain delays and rising sustainability reporting requirements.
A separate market analysis predicts that global data centre electricity consumption will triple between 2024 and 2030, propelled by artificial‑intelligence workloads and expanding cloud services. The United States and China currently account for roughly 38 % and 24 % of this usage, but China is expected to overtake the U.S. by 2030, reaching about 30 % of global demand. Growth is also strong across the Asia‑Pacific region. Leading tech firms – AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and others – are rapidly expanding capacity, while the sector’s energy draw, comparable to that of small cities, is prompting calls for grid upgrades and greater reliance on renewable sources.
