Spain's DGT Announces New Seatbelt and Emergency Lane Rules for Drivers

The Spanish government has approved a comprehensive reform of the General Traffic Regulations. The new rule makes the use of seat‑belts mandatory for taxi drivers, parcel couriers and driving‑school instructors in all circumstances, removing previous exemptions. Non‑compliance will attract a €200 fine and the automatic loss of four licence points, with limited exceptions for medical reasons and emergency personnel.

A second amendment, taking effect on 1 October 2026, introduces a compulsory central emergency lane on multi‑lane highways. When traffic slows or stops, vehicles in the right‑hand lane must move right and those in the left‑hand lane must move left, leaving a clear corridor for ambulances, fire engines, police and tow trucks. The measure, modeled on the German "Rettungsgasse," is expected to cut emergency‑vehicle travel times by up to 40 % and applies to all motorists on such roads.
