Spain's DGT clarifies V16 beacon requirements for vehicles

From 1 January 2026 the V16 emergency beacon becomes mandatory for most road vehicles in Spain, including passenger cars, mixed-use vehicles, buses and goods‑transport vehicles. Motorcycles are exempt, and vehicles temporarily registered from other countries may use the emergency devices accepted in their home state. The DGT notes that a single beacon can be moved between several cars owned by the same person, as the device is not tied to a specific licence plate.

The technical inspection (ITV) does not verify the presence of a V16 beacon, so drivers can pass the inspection without one. However, the DGT warns that the beacon must be used in the event of a breakdown or accident; failure to display it when required can result in a fine of up to €80. Traffic agents are not conducting dedicated checks for the beacon, but its use remains a safety obligation.
