Spain's DGT launches Operation Verano 2026 to manage record 104 million summer road trips

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has kicked off Operation Verano 2026, a traffic‑safety campaign running throughout July and August. The agency forecasts more than 104 million long‑distance journeys this summer and has deployed reinforced weekend surveillance, mobile radars, aerial units and additional lanes on main corridors. Heavy vehicles over 7.5 t are restricted on the busiest routes, roadworks are paused, and special measures target high‑traffic periods such as the July launch weekend and August holidays.

A new requirement introduced this season is the carriage of a V‑16 warning beacon and approved tyre‑repair equipment (spare wheel, temporary wheel, repair kit or run‑flat system). Drivers found without these items can be fined 200 euros. The DGT also urges motorists to check vehicle condition, stay hydrated, rest regularly and avoid leaving passengers in hot cars.
