Spain's DGT launches summer traffic safety operation

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has activated the first Special Summer Operation for 2026, focusing on the province of Cádiz. The agency forecasts about 140,000 vehicle movements in the area, with the busiest routes expected on the A‑4, AP‑4, A‑7, A‑48, CA‑33, N‑340 and A‑396, especially toward the Bay of Cádiz, Costa de la Luz and the Campo de Gibraltar. Speed, alcohol and drug controls have been intensified, with additional radar, camera and information‑panel monitoring. Drivers are urged to plan trips, check road conditions and use the mandatory V‑16 warning device for incidents.

As part of the broader summer campaign, which anticipates roughly 104 million road trips nationwide between 1 July and 31 August, the DGT has also begun imposing €200 fines and a six‑point licence deduction for using a mobile phone’s GPS or other functions while driving. The agency clarified that mobile mounts must not obstruct the driver’s view; non‑compliant mounts can incur a €100 fine. These measures aim to curb distraction‑related accidents during the peak travel period.
