Spain's DGT radar fines reach record 246.8 million euros

Spanish traffic authority (DGT) radar fines reached a record 246.8 million euros in 2025, marking a 14% increase from the previous year. According to data from Automovilistas Europeos Asociados (AEA), these speeding fines now account for 41.5% of the total revenue from DGT-managed fines, excluding Catalonia and the Basque Country.

The report highlights a significant concentration of enforcement, noting that just 50 radar devices out of more than 1,000 were responsible for 1,342,285 citations. This concentration has reignited debates regarding radar placement, with the AEA questioning the use of devices on high-capacity roads.

Separately, controversy has emerged regarding cameras monitoring continuous line crossings near Madrid. Legal experts argue that some systems, which use only two images to detect lane crossings, may fail to prove the exact moment of the infraction, potentially violating the presumption of innocence. Some drivers have successfully appealed these fines after authorities admitted the operational methods did not align with legislation.
