Spain implements major traffic regulation reforms and safety updates

Spain is implementing significant updates to its General Traffic Regulations, set to take effect on October 1, 2026. These reforms aim to enhance the safety of vulnerable road users through several key changes.

New rules will prohibit the simultaneous use of intermittent amber vehicle lights and green pedestrian signals at traffic lights to prevent confusion. Additionally, electric scooter users (VMP) will be required to wear approved helmets and reflective vests, with violations carrying a 200 euro fine. For drivers passing stationary vehicles involved in emergencies or breakdowns, the law now mandates a minimum lateral distance of 1.5 meters and a speed reduction of at least 20 km/h below the posted limit.

In separate automotive news, an ADAC study revealed that approximately 84% of tested keyless entry models were vulnerable to signal extension attacks, though 68 vehicles were identified as highly secure due to ultra-wideband (UWB) technology.
