Spain's DGT warns of €200 fines and 6‑point loss for handheld phone use and obstructive mounts

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) confirms that using a mobile phone while driving in Spain incurs a €200 fine and the removal of six points from the driver’s licence. The 2022 reform of the Traffic and Road Safety Law increased the point penalty from three to six for holding a phone with the hand, while the monetary penalty remained unchanged.

The agency also notes that phone mounts that impair the driver’s field of vision or become a distraction can be penalised, although it does not specify which mounts are allowed. It recommends mounts attached to ventilation grilles or compact dashboard holders and stresses that hands‑free systems are permissible only when they do not require the driver to manipulate the device. The DGT reiterates that the rule applies even when the vehicle is stopped at a traffic light or in a jam, as the car is still considered in motion, and it has intensified enforcement campaigns to reduce distracted driving.
