Spain's Equality Ministry convenes crisis committee on surge in gender murders
The Spanish Ministry of Equality, led by Minister Ana Redondo, has convened a crisis committee to analyse a sharp rise in gender‑based murders, focusing on Andalusia where nine women were killed in early 2026, including four in the province of Málaga. Seven of the nine victims were living with their aggressors at the time of the killings, and four of those cohabiting victims were in a breakup phase, a high‑risk situation identified by experts. The murders have left eight children orphaned; two perpetrators have committed suicide and three have attempted it. The committee brings together representatives from the ministries of Equality, Interior and Justice, the Prosecutor’s Office, the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and the autonomous communities, and will also meet with the Andalusian regional government. It is debating measures such as “recalibrating the weight the judicial and police systems give to victims” and improving support for children left without parents.
Overall, Spain recorded 32 women murdered by partners or ex‑partners in 2026, highlighting the national dimension of the problem. The crisis committee follows a broader trend in which, in 2023, 80 % of the 49 women murdered in the country shared a home with their aggressor. Officials stress that the response must prioritize prosecution of perpetrators and protection of victims.
