The Spanish Ministry of Equality convened a crisis committee to analyse a sharp increase in gender‑based murders in Andalusia. Nine women were killed over June and July, with four of the homicides occurring in the province of Málaga. Seven of the victims were still living with their aggressor at the time of the killing, and four of those women were in a breakup phase.

The committee, which brings together representatives of the ministries of Equality, Interior and Justice, the Prosecutor’s Office, the Council of the General Judiciary (CGPJ) and the autonomous communities, cited earlier data showing that 80 % of the 49 women murdered in 2023 had shared a home with their partner. It called for a review of procedural “conformities” in gender‑violence cases, a recalibration of how the judicial and police systems weigh complaints withdrawn by victims, and special measures for the eight children left orphaned by the murders. Two perpetrators have died by suicide and three have attempted it. The committee also urged that cases where the aggressor takes his own life not be closed immediately, to facilitate aid for indirect victims.
