Spain's Equality Ministry starts semi‑annual monitoring of gender‑based violence actions
The Spanish Interior Ministry’s VioGen system recorded 104,666 active cases of gender‑based violence as of 31 July 2026. Of these, 1,165 were classified as high‑risk and 14 as extreme‑risk. The data show 53,818 cases involving minors under the victim’s care and 13,464 cases flagged as “special relevance” because of a high likelihood of severe or lethal violence. The highest numbers of active cases are in Andalusia (27,885), the Valencian Community (17,111) and Madrid (12,591).
In response, the Ministry of Equality, led by Minister Ana Redondo, has activated a semi‑annual tracking system for the 74 recommendations issued by crisis committees convened after femicide cases. The recommendations are grouped into nine thematic areas and involve the Interior and Health ministries, the Prosecutor’s Office, the General Council of the Judiciary, security forces and all autonomous communities. The system will review implementation of measures such as new awareness campaigns, professional training, improved inter‑institutional coordination and actions in the education system. So far in 2026, 32 women have been killed in gender‑based violence, including six murders that occurred within a little‑over‑a‑week period in July.
