Spain's EV rollout stalls amid charging shortages and policy uncertainty

Javier Goikoetxea, chief executive of Next Mobility, says Europe is falling behind in the shift to autonomous, shared electric vehicles. He argues that the EU should cut red tape and increase financial support – through subsidies, tax breaks or direct aid – to keep the industry competitive. Goikoetxea warns that limited charging points, high street‑charging prices and a lack of home‑parking for half of Spanish drivers hinder electric‑car adoption, and that dependence on foreign supply chains remains a risk.

An Arval Consulting study ranks countries on electric‑vehicle readiness. Spain scores 51 out of 100, topping its own mid‑tier group but lagging in key areas: only 4% of the vehicle fleet is electric and the charging‑infrastructure score is 15. While cost parity for ownership is high, public confidence is low; 76% of Spaniards say subsidy schemes are unclear and policies change too often, slowing the transition.

Both comments highlight that insufficient charging networks and policy uncertainty are the main obstacles to Spain’s electric‑mobility ambitions.
